About bog oak

What kind of ancient tree is this? What path has it made in thousands of years? What is the secret of his longevity?

About bog oak

Bog oak is also called abonos and morta.

From Wikipedia Bog-wood represents the early stages of wood fossilization with further stages ultimately forming jet, lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years. Bog-wood is often removed from fields and placed in clearance cairns. It is a rare form of timber that is claimed to be “comparable to some of the world’s most expensive tropical hardwoods”. This centuries-long process, often termed “maturation”, turns the wood from golden-brown to completely black, while increasing its hardness to such a level that it can only be carved with the use of specialty cutting tools. While the time necessary for the oak to transform into abonos varies, the “maturation” commonly lasts thousands of years. Due to the ecological reasons no two trunks can be found of the same color.

Several thousand years ago, in the Northern hemisphere of the Earth, as well as today, there were growing several hundred species of oaks Some of them were growing in cold climatic zones, the others in warm ones. Some shed leaves, the others were evergreen... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak

But all these magnificent trees have one thing in common... If, as a result of a natural disaster (changes in the direction of the river flow, floods, swamping, etc.), the oak falls into the water, and then goes deep into the ground and gets no access to oxygen, it can stay there for thousands of years and not collapse, but become even stronger, acquire new qualities. How does this happen?

We have gone to considerable lengths by collecting the stories (legends) of old-timers who recovered bog oaks, studying scientific literature, and conducting empirical studies of the processes occurring nowadays on the European continent. Summarizing all the knowledge, we reproduced the events that were happening a thousand years ago. In 2017, we made the world’s first film about bog oak, which systematically explains all the stages and processes that bog oak came through.

In our film, we have reproduced the most common natural phenomenon, as a result of which an ancient oak tree found itself in an anaerobic environment, namely a change in the direction of the river flow. The oak tree could also get into the anaerobic environment as a result of flooding, swamping or another natural phenomenon, but according to our estimates, this happened much less common, and all subsequent staining processes occurred similarly; therefore, we decided to show how the river hid the ancient oak trees thousands of years ago in a natural repository, and returned it to us today, as a wonderful gift from the ancient times.

Where and how is bog oak extracted?

You can rarely find the places of bog oak in the world. Bog oak is a very rare and unique wood. Not many people manage to find this antique tree. Over the past 8,000 years, less than 1% of the oaks growing on our planet have fallen into the anaerobic environment and become the bog oaks.

The depth of the bog oak location in the ground may vary from 1 to 15 meters or more. If the depth of location is small, it can be found even during agricultural soil cultivation, as well as earthwork (recovery of sand, clay or gravel, etc.).

If the depth of location is large, then this ancient tree can only be washed by the river with its rapid flow.

We are engaged in the search and recovery of the bog oaks from the bottom of the rivers of the European continent. We are passionate about our work. The work with genuine antique bog oak implies constant meeting with antiquity. Sailing hundreds of kilometers along the bottom of the rivers, we find the tree trunks of the bog oak, pieces of dishes used by ancient human settlements, bones of prehistoric animals; we also observe big and small fish, and admire the unusual underwater world of the rivers.

We encourage everyone to relate to this wonderful ancient tree with great love, take care of every log, every little piece. First of all, we extract those logs that can die when the water level drops or under other circumstances.

Most of the deeply located bog oaks photo remain for future generations and this is wonderful. Some of them will become available again only after thousands of years, when the river changes its course and returns to them.
